Carol Burnett: “I remember that I was on unemployment, living in a one-room apartment with my first husband when I got the call to go to the casting meeting. I went in and had the interview; I met with Max Liebman, David Brown, and Buddy. I went home. The phone rang an hour later, I got the job.
Stanley Productions: Buddy said that when you came in for the interview, he asked, “So, you think you’re funny?” And you replied, “Funnier than you, fatso!”
Carol: “I was so shy, I would never have said that to Buddy. That sounds like a Buddy story.
Buddy gave me my first real TV break. I made two hundred and fifty dollars a week which was a lot of money and far better than unemployment. I remember that we used to do a bit of improv….I especially remember a scene on a bus. I had a good time with Buddy, we clicked right-away. Stanley was the only sit-com going out live, doing improv on live TV was very brave.”
Carol Burnett appears in 14 episodes: #’s 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, & 19
